where i'm from
I am from the ugly green couch
from the tall bookshelf at the end of the stairs and a pink canopy bed.
I am from a condo apartment complex
full of warmth.
I am from the place of a forsythia forest in the middle of a concrete jungle.
The lush green bushes outside my front door
whose long gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.
I'm from early morning reading sessions in the upstairs hallway and stubbornness
from Gramma Willey and my mama.
I'm from nightly snuggles on the couch and sugar sprinkled on cereal
and from bedtime prayers to a Heavenly Father.
I'm from running barefoot and playing Barbies beneath the trees.
I'm from bike riding, tag playing, jump roping, and hop-scotching.
I'm from Punky Brewster and the Little Mermaid.
I'm from "bad strangers look like nice people", "I love you this much"
and "Miss Mary Mack".
I'm from every other weekend visitation with my Daddy
and breakfast at Jakes and the bird-feeder sitting just outside the glass slider window.
I'm from Massachusetts
and raspberry turnovers and large family holiday parties.
I'm from a mother remarried and relocated.
I'm from being an only child to a sibling to three.
I'm from Gramma's cake pans in the cupboards and her recipes in my mouth.
I'm from redemption at nine and much-needed grace at twenty-two.
I'm from re-dedication to Christ and salvation from ruining my life.
I'm from a life lived to glorify God.
That's where I'm from.
This post was inspired by my real-life friend and fellow-blogger, Julie. Thanks Julie for your great idea!
